Inter-American Coal is dedicated to the development of safe and modern underground mechanized coal mining in Colombia. Our focus is in the departments of Cundinamarca, Boyacá, and Norte de Santander, where the highest quality coal in Colombia is located. In 2014, the Colombian government estimated these regions produced almost 6.4 million tonnes of coal, of which 4.7 million tonnes were exported.
Of the three departments, Norte de Santander exports the highest percentage of its production at over two-thirds, followed by Cundinamarca and Boyacá, where the majority of metallurgical coal and coke production is located. Despite the distance between these departments and the coast, Inter-American Coal has the resources and capabilities to bring this high-quality coal to the seaborne market.
In Venezuela, IAC originally developed and was the joint owner of the Mina Norte surface mine in the early 1990. Mina Norte was developed as a joint venture with Carbozulia, Venezuela national coal company. Today, Inter-American Coal continues to export coal produced by Carbozulia from Mina Norte.
